‘FOR ART’ IS NO EXCUSE TO TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS

Alfred Hitchcock also told Joan Fontaine that everyone on the set of Rebecca hated her in order to make her feel paranoid and uneasy.

All of this is so counter to what I was taught about directing, and the actor-director relationship. These tactics are lazy as hell in addition to being abusive, I don’t care how great these directors are. It’s so fucked up.

They aren’t great directors if they feel they need to abuse their actors.

A producer I worked with horrified me with a story of how she verbally diminished an actress’s self esteem in order to get her ready for a scene they was getting ready to shoot.

This was essentially what Kubruck did to Duvall on The Shining.

The entitlement these men feel to their vision and how willing they are to abuse and endanger their actors to get it is disgusting.
