Some of my thoughts and feelings.

I’ve been trying very hard to keep my SM something that I enjoy. A place where I can like the things I like without having to struggle to like it. For me that meant not following people who chose to continually use their SM to be salty and angry and negative. It just wasn’t my bag, baby.

That is getting increasingly hard to do. Not avoid the negative. That is comes and goes and the occasional rant or salty joke makes me laugh or nod my head in agreement #same. What is getting hard if freely enjoying. Fanning has become so rule filled.

Production started this venture in a way that is impossible to continue. They chat with fans like they are old friends, they share the trials and tribulations with the jobs. They laugh and joke with fans in a way that leaves fans entitled. It’s understandable why it started that way. Everyone was excited. Both fans and production were so thrilled to be doing the thing and having the thing embraced to fervently. And, they shared content. Real content. Real updates. That changed drastically, probably due to ownership of content and nda. Now, they expect fans to stop. We should stop being excited. We should stop asking questions. We should only be fans when Outlander needs us to be fans. Now, to me, it is no coincidence that paps, tour groups, local papers, and fans know where and when all filming is taking place. I think certain things are leaked intentionally. But even if the aren’t, it is productions responsibility to ensure the safety of crew and cast, and maintain the integrity of filming. They can make drop off and pick up closer to the actual filming location so cast is not paraded through a throng of fans. They can insist that cast wear coats and cloaks to conceal spoiler costumes. They can put up large screens as barriers instead of typical metal railing. They could set aside a safe area for fans so they aren’t falling off walls, or out of trees, or trudging through private property potentially injuring themselves.

And as far as the actors go and keeping their personal life separate from professional life…. Don’t post pictures of making pancakes, or eating pasta or your snow covered cars. Don’t tease your costar on his “girlfriend’s” tweet. That’s all personal.

Show us photos of landscape when it on location. Show us pictures of the snow all over your trailer, or how messy it it. Tweet us how you had a great day on set. That’s all fan engagement without touching your personal life.

As far as any fan should know, working on Outlander should be nothing but rainbows and unicorns. We should not know if you are tired or cold or mad or overworked. We want to be excited for the product. What other business do you know where it is ok to go on SM and complain not only about your job, but about your consumers?

So yeah, I am incredibly disappointed. I’m not unsympathetic to them. I do sympathize that they work hard, and often long hours. That’s the job. But I am disappointed that fans get blamed because production cannot feasibly maintain the level and method of engagement that they initiated in the first place.

There seems to be an increasing number of criteria that make the best fans ever. Basically, no talking about the book content or current filming content, or concerns about story, until they want you to. The message I am getting is: don’t be a fan until we need you to promote only the content we want you to promote. Good luck keeping obsessed fans during the 9 months of no content with all the limitations in place.

If even Sherri is disappointed, that says a lot.

Good points Sherri. Thanks.

“This whole “inclusion rider” thing? Scientist men can do this too.
“I’d love to speak on your panel. If the panel isn’t 50% women, then I’ll pass and I can recommend some women for my slot.”
