Devotion, Helice Wen

Helice Wen was born in Shenzhen, China where her interest in art began at the age of 5 when she first started copying children’s book illustrations. After graduating from the Academy of Art University San Francisco in 2009, she began working as a children’s book illustrator.  Wen is now focused on creating gallery works. She has exhibited in New York, Florida, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Harsh words, meaning given
only by anger. Unthoughtfulness, by those who occupy our every thought.
Memories, both those that won’t leave us and those who ran away, covered by the
cloak of indefinition brought on by years gone. The small and painful betrayals
of our bodies, disconnecting from our will.

All those wounds that ache
deep, inflicted not by the razor of massive loss or shortcoming, but by small
paper cuts of everyday life. Our immaterial bodies are scarred with those paper
cuts and some days are like a magnifying glass for all those scabs.

It was not a good day.

In spite of her irregular schedule at work, Claire had always been a
good sleeper – with the honourable exception of the time when Jamie had been
serving in The Doctors Without Borders;
and the weeks he had spent walking through the valley of shadows of healing at
her place.  But for the last few weeks,
her slumber had been disrupted; she woke up frequently with a sense of
pointless urgency, only to discover her body cold with a shimmer of sweat. The
days had become harder to bear, as she had some trouble focusing, and her
strong temperament seemed to be easily triggered.
